NEWTOWN – Corvettes and community spirit combined to make Saturday’s “Takin’ It To the Street Summerfest” block party on Sycamore Street one for the books.
The event, now in its third year, had people dancin’ in the street to the sounds of singer/songwriter Jeff London, Crossroads, The Brodie Valos Band and Scoville Blues, while sports car lovers salivated over the rows of Corvettes glistening in the June sunshine.
The car show was a first for Summerfest, organized by the Liberty Region Corvette Club, and extended the party an extra block this year from Silo Drive to Jefferson Avenue.
In addition to the cars, there was plenty more for people to get revved up about as the aroma of Kettle Korn wafted through the air.
Sycamore Street businesses and a handful of nonprofits used the event to showcase their goods and services and to promote their upcoming community activities.
Dogs and Cats Rule provided free doggie treats to its four-legged friends, the owners of the children’s consignment store Milk Money were there with an array of gift items, Sycamore Kitchens gave out free balloon creations and featured a display of its services while First Federal Bank enticed baseball enthusiasts with a chance to win Phillies tickets.
Standing behind a booth decked out in red, white and blue streamers, organizers of Newtown’s First Fourth were there to promote the upcoming Independence Day celebration on Saturday, July 7. Highlighting the day will be a parade through town, a block party and a fireworks display behind the Newtown Middle School.
Also there were representatives from Fund A Cure, which raises money to fight pancreatic cancer. The organization will again be holding its “Run Over Cancer” on Saturday, July 7 at the Council Rock High School North in conjunction with First Fourth.
While learning about upcoming events and discovering the eclectic mix of businesses located on Sycamore Street, visitors had an opportunity to savor a taste of the street’s eating establishments.
Sycamore Grill served pigs in a blanket and pulled pork sandwiches, draft beer and hot sandwiches were on the menu in front of the Green Parrot, the Newtown Farmer’s Market offered its traditional tender pork roast sandwiches while ice cream was a hot commodity at Sweet Peas.
Presented by the Sycamore Street Community Association, this year’s Summerfest was sponsored by Pennoni Associates Engineers Consultants, the professional engineering company which designed and constructed the revitalized Sycamore Street.
Also joining Pennoni to make sure this year’s festival was a huge success were sponsors Green Parrot Restaurant and First Federal Bank of Bucks County as well as Goodnoe’s Corner/US Realty Associates.
