James Garner’s No. 44 AIR Racing Corvette
One of just three specially prepared L88 Corvettes built for James Garner’s American International Racing team, this incredible 1968 Corvette represents a remarkable combination of Hollywood history, racing heritage, and American performance!
Most people remember James Garner for his starring roles in Maverick, The Great Escape, and The Rockford Files. But Garner was also a serious automotive enthusiast and accomplished driver who took his passion for racing well beyond the silver screen.
In late 1967, three specially ordered Le Mans Blue 1968 Corvette L88 Convertibles were delivered to Garner’s American International Racing (AIR) team. Powered by Chevrolet’s legendary 427ci L88 big-block, these Corvettes were destined for the racetrack, not the showroom.
Just 80 Corvettes were equipped with the legendary L88 engine in 1968, making these already rare machines even more extraordinary!
Working with legendary Corvette racer Dick Guldstrand and Traco Engineering, Garner’s team prepared the three cars for competition. Two, numbered 44 and 45, competed at the 1968 24 Hours of Daytona, while the third initially served promotional and backup duties before developing its own racing history.

Corvette SUV and Electric Corvette
Plans Reportedly Scrapped!
For years, rumors have circulated that General Motors was planning to turn Corvette into an entire family of vehicles, including an SUV, a fully electric sports car, and even a four-door sedan. Well, it looks like those plans have hit the brakes!
According to a recent report from GM Authority, GM has shelved its ambitious plans to expand the Corvette nameplate beyond the legendary two-seat sports car. The proposed electric SUV was intended to compete with vehicles like the Porsche Cayenne, while an all-electric Corvette and possibly a four-door fastback were also under consideration.
The reasoning? GM hasn’t officially explained its decision, but slowing electric vehicle demand and concerns about diluting the Corvette name may have played a role. After all, Corvette has spent more than 70 years building its reputation as America’s sports car, not America’s family SUV!
Before Corvette purists celebrate too much, there’s an important distinction: GM has not officially confirmed the cancellation, and Corvette’s chief engineer recently indicated that a fully electric Corvette remains a possibility someday. For now, however, the reported expansion plans appear to be on hold.
As far as we’re concerned, a Corvette should remain a Corvette! Two seats, breathtaking performance, and styling that makes you look back every time you park it. Some traditions are worth preserving!
