The End of the Convertible?

CadillacConvertibleWell in 1976 Cadillac said just that, “It is the only convertible now built in America. And it will be our last. The very last.” Why? Because of the Feds of course. The looming federal 30 mph rollover test legislation was about to make the convertible go away forever. It did not help that Air Conditioning was becoming more standard, and people fell in love with the T-Tops (made even more popular by the smash hit movie Smokey and the Bandit).

It took time, but fortunately, and like always, smart American’s figured out a way to comply with the new regulations and in the 80’s the open roof convertible was back for good.

I think we can say with a fair amount of certainty that the Eldorado presented here is the lowest mile ’76 Convertible in existence! Purchased new at Powell-Olds Cadillac Inc. in Gastonia, NC. this ragtop has been extremely well preserved over the decades and presents as almost new. As well it should with only 68 original miles showing on the odometer! The paint shines brilliantly, the leather is still supple and when you start her up, you still have to strain to hear that quiet and smooth Cadillac idle.
