Most people remember James Garner for his starring roles in Maverick, The Great Escape, and The Rockford Files. But Garner was also a serious automotive enthusiast and accomplished driver who took his passion for racing well beyond the silver screen.
In late 1967, three specially ordered Le Mans Blue 1968 Corvette L88 Convertibles were delivered to Garner’s American International Racing (AIR) team. Powered by Chevrolet’s legendary 427ci L88 big-block, these Corvettes were destined for the racetrack, not the showroom.
Only 80 L88 Corvettes were produced for 1968, making these already rare machines even more extraordinary!
Working with legendary Corvette racer Dick Guldstrand and Traco Engineering, Garner’s team prepared the three cars for competition. Two, numbered 44 and 45, competed at the 1968 24 Hours of Daytona, while the third initially served promotional and backup duties before developing its own racing history.
