GM Locking Fuel Door “Upgrade”!

C8 Gas Door Fix

Earlier this year, Corvette owners discovered that GM had quietly eliminated the locking fuel-filler door from C8 Corvettes midway through the 2026 model year. Since the feature previously locked and unlocked with the car, its disappearance looked like another cost-cutting move.

But Corvette Chief Engineer Josh Holder says there was more behind the decision.

During a Q&A at the National Corvette Museum, Holder explained that eliminating the locking mechanism reduced weight, improved induction airflow, reduced noise and vibration, and shortened assembly time.

There was another reason, the lock apparently wasn’t very effective. The small solenoid could make a noticeable popping noise, and according to Holder, the locking mechanism was relatively easy to defeat anyway.

The fuel door still opens by simply pushing on it, while the Corvette’s capless fuel-filler system makes siphoning fuel difficult.

The change began during the 2026 model year, so some early-production ’26 Corvettes have the locking door while later cars do not. The feature is also expected to remain absent for 2027.

GM says the Corvette is now a little lighter, quieter and simpler to build.

We have a feeling some Corvette owners may still prefer the lock!

A Very Special Invitation

We’re proud to share some exciting news from Corvette Mike.

Two extraordinary automobiles. Two unforgettable Las Vegas settings. One exciting new chapter.

We’re proud to announce the official launch of the Vietro Collective, making its debut at the prestigious Wynn Concours d’Elegance, October 29–November 1, 2026, in Las Vegas.

Our beautiful 1963 Tuxedo Black Corvette Sting Ray Split-Window Z06 Coupe will be displayed on the lawn at The Wynn as part of the Vietro Collective, rather than participating in the judged competition. It’s a fitting stage for the first-year C2, a car whose unmistakable silhouette still commands attention.

Alongside it will sit a stunning Ferrari 458 Spider celebrating Ferrari’s iconic 60th Anniversary in America. The Corvette’s dramatic split-window profile and the Ferrari’s flowing, sculpted lines will bring two distinct expressions of automotive beauty to the lawn at The Wynn. Together, they’ll be a sight to behold.

This is what the Vietro Collective is about: remarkable automobiles, enduring design, and the passion that brings enthusiasts together. We can’t imagine a more fitting and memorable setting for its official introduction.

Join us at Wynn and be part of the Vietro Collective’s debut. Mark your calendar for October 29–November 1 and make plans to see these extraordinary automobiles in person. Contact Corvette Mike for display details and to connect with our team during the event.
