Does a C8 Convenience Feature Help Thieves?

The C8 Corvette is one of the most sought-after cars, with some models having a wait time of over a year. Despite the high demand, theft rates are very low—less than 0.1%. This rarity is due in part to the low demand for used parts and the car’s robust security features.

The issue arises when the car is left running and unattended. While there might be places in the USA where this practice is still safe, they are becoming increasingly rare.

This vulnerability is not unique to Corvettes; it applies to all cars. However, Chevrolet has an additional feature that comes into play. If you turn off your Corvette without the fob being present, the C8 will allow a one-time restart without the fob. This is intended as a safety feature for situations like losing connectivity at an inopportune time. For example, if your fob’s battery dies and you stall on railroad tracks, you can restart the car to get off the tracks. Or if a passenger has the fob and goes into a store, you can turn off the car while waiting and still restart it once if needed.

The simple solution to prevent theft is to lock your car when you leave it. This not only disables the restart feature but also sets the alarm.

Steve S.

I am 69 years old. In 2018, my wife of 25 years passed away from a 2 year battle with Pancreatic Cancer. I always wanted a Corvette, but she had no interest in having one.

About a week before she passed, when we knew the end was near, she could barely speak. She pulled me close to her and said “When I am gone, please get your Corvette”.

After a 12 month search, I was able to find what I was looking for, a 2005 Convertible 6spM with Z51 package. It had only 24k miles and the price was right. When I signed the papers, tears started pouring from my eyes, thanking her for her blessing this.

Since that time, I have become active in Corvette Annapolis, and this past year was elected to the presidency.

I love my car, and could not believe it took me this long to obtain one.
